WASTE ROCK DUMP DESIGN

A Waste Rock Dump (WRD) design typically refers to the planning and engineering involved in the disposal of waste rock generated from mining activities. In mining operations, large quantities of waste rock are produced as a byproduct of extracting desired minerals or ores. Proper management of this waste is crucial to minimising environmental impacts and ensuring safety. CECL offer the service of designing waste rock dumps focused on creating safe, sustainable, and compliant waste rock disposal systems:

  • Site Selection and Layout: We assess topography, geology, and hydrology to identify suitable locations and design layouts that minimize environmental risks. The site is selected using a Multiple Accounts Analysis to ensure the selected site has minimal risks in relation to the future operations and closure of the dam site.
  • Slope Stability and Geotechnical Engineering: Our designs incorporate engineered slopes and reinforcement measures to prevent landslides, erosion, and structural failures. This will be done through a geotechnical investigation to develop the geotechnical model to be used for the waste rock dump geotechnical design
  • Drainage and Water Management: We integrate drainage systems to control runoff, reduce acid rock drainage, and protect groundwater and surface water quality. The designs are carried out to ensure sufficient water control management plans are in place.
  • Environmental Safeguards: WRD designs include dust suppression, vegetation cover, monitoring plans, and rehabilitation plans to reduce ecological disturbance and promote long-term land recovery.
